The first time I saw the title of Dr. Dobson’s book Parenting the Strong-Willed Child I breathed a sigh of relief. While I knew several strong-willed children, mine wasn’t one of them. I’m sure you know some of them, whether you’re parenting them or not. They do whatever they want to do and don’t hesitate to throw a fit if they don’t get what they want.
I realized recently, much to my chagrin, that I am a strong-willed child.
The Lord often has to prod me several times to do the right thing. And, no matter how many times He’s warned me not to do certain things, I’m very likely to go ahead and do them anyway. I’ve been spanked. I’ve been left to experience the consequences of my own actions. Still, I fold my arms, stamp my feet, and demand my own way.
I know God loves me, but I do wonder if he gets as frustrated with me as most loving parents get with their own strong-willed children.
