Sunday is Independence Day. It’s also the anniversary of the day I met The Furry Guy.
The Furry Guy and I both had friends who worked at the same discount store in the local mall. Several employees of that store had plans to gather to watch the fireworks, which were to take place right there at the mall. Near closing time the employees and who weren’t working started to gather along with their family friends. It was fairly chilly for July 4.
I was standing at the service desk chatting with my friend when two guys came in and walked up to the desk. My friend greeted one of the men. She then headed off to help a customer. I could clearly hear the discussion between the two men.
Friend: You know what sounds really good? Hot chocolate.
Furry Guy: You know what sounds really good? Hot chocolate with some peppermint schnapps.
Me [making actual eye contact with The Furry Guy for the first time]: That does sound good.
Furry Guy: Most girls don’t like peppermint schnapps.
Me: I’m not most girls.
That was 26 years ago this Sunday. We married less than a year later. Things haven’t always been easy, but they’ve always been worth the trouble. And, yes, the sparks are still there.
