Starting Your Day Right

Want to have a great day? Start the night before. Seriously.

Look over your schedule for the next day. Make your plan. You’ll set that plan in the back of your mind, allowing your subconscious to work on it while you sleep. Believe it or not, you’ll be less likely to forget things. Of course, that’s even more true if you actually write that plan down.

What do you need to take with you? Gather it together. I use totes. Sometimes I put things in front of the door. Whatever way you choose to gather the things you don’t want to forget, do it the night before. If I have something in the fridge that needs to go I’ll put a sticky-note on the door at eye level. This way you’ll not be rushing around in the morning trying to find things.

Get a good night’s sleep. I know we Americans tend to brag/complain about little sleep we get. That’s just not good. Everyone’s different. The Furry Guy is good with between five and six hours of sleep. I need between six and seven. I know people who really need at least eight. If your alarm routinely wakens you from a dead sleep you probably aren’t getting enough sleep. You should be waking naturally about the time your alarm goes off. Getting enough sleep helps your body and mind to function properly. It also helps your attitude. Well-rested people tend to be much more patient with others.

If you have trouble getting to sleep, try establishing a bedtime routine. Our bodies and minds respond well to routines. Just like when we were children, the act of going through a set of motions every evening can help our minds to enter that sleep zone more easily.
